What did I do?
I joined the DevSoc society to explore opportunities in tech, to meet similar minded people and to attend the various tech-related talks and meetups in Nottingham to gain a better understanding of the job market here.
When did this take place?
I attended a social on the 17th October at [ALT] Gaming Lounge, a Python presentation on the 18th October and I attended a Women in Tech talk on the 1st November.
What have I gained from this activity?
I was honestly a little dubious about joining DevSOc. I've been coding for a long time and I stopped coding for fun a long time ago, so initially I joined the society on a social level as I didn't want to be involved in side projects or coding competitions. The members tend to be of the same geeky nature I am so it has become a bit of a home from home and I am regularly active on the Discord chat.
It has to be said that the DevSoc members are incredibly clued up about events, bursaries and opportunities. Some of the information being passed around is regarding opportunities and is really extremely useful.
The networking events (women in Tech) were tough as I struggle a little with networking, however I'm better at it than most of the others in the group so I was able to act as a middle man at meetings which I actually enjoyed.
